6th Asian Population Association (APA) Conference

ISERN participated in the 6th Asian Population Association (APA) Conference, held from November 27 to November 30, 2024, at the Soaltee Hotel in Kathmandu. We contributed to the event through both poster and oral presentations and shared data, booklets, policy brief, and insights from 25+ years of the Chitwan Valley Family Study during the conference.

The conference was a landmark event, uniting researchers, policymakers, and professionals to address critical demographic issues in the Asia-Pacific region. This prestigious gathering facilitated knowledge sharing, introduced innovative research methodologies, and strengthened regional collaborations.

ISER-N presented research and insights during the conference, showcasing the impactful work on diverse topics, including happiness dynamics, women's trajectories, early childhood development, education, migration, and the interplay of social, economic, and cultural factors shaping lives in Nepal.

·         Indra Chaudary, Dirgha Jibi Ghimire, and Uttam Sharma presented their research titled "Happiness and its Associations with Individual Attitudes, Practices, and Importance in Life."

November 28, 2024

·         Prem Pandit, Dirgha Ghimire, and Uttam Sharma presented a poster titled "Teacher satisfaction with their job and its association with student learning performance among secondary schools in western Chitwan, Nepal."

·         Uttam Sharma, Dirgha Ghimire, and Emily Treleaven presented their research titled "Exploring the Relationship between Birthweight and Father's International Migration Status in Nepal."

·         Dirgha Ghimire presented his research titled "Social Change, Courtship Processes, and Marital Quality in a Non-Western Setting."

·         D. Ghimire, C. Mendes de Leon, E. Briceño, K. Langa, C. Mitchell, B. West, U. Sharma, Abha Sharma, U. Dhakal, and N. Adhikari presented their study titled "Design and Methodology of Population-Based Dementia Assessment in Nepal: The Chitwan Valley Family Study - Study on Cognition and Aging in Nepal (CVFS-SCAN)."

·         Florence Arestoff, Olivia Bertelli, Elodie Djemai, Dirgha Ghimire, and Uttam Sharma presented their research titled "Socio-economic determinants of Early Childhood Development in a poor rural setting: Empirical evidence from Nepal."

·         Sarah Brauner-Otto presented her research titled "Women’s Work-Family Trajectories: A life course investigation of work, education, marriage, and childbearing in Nepal."

November 29, 2024

·         Dirgha Ghimire chaired a session and presented titled "Environmental Vulnerabilities and Urbanization."

·         Lyman Stone presented his research titled "Intergenerational Transmission of Fertility Attitudes and Behaviors in the Chitwan Valley."

November 30, 2024

·         Adina Gurung, Dirgha Jibi Ghimire, and Uttam Sharma presented their study titled "Association between Women’s Empowerment in Household Decision-Making and Social Media Use."

·         Jennifer Glick, Dirgha Ghimire, and Scott Yabiku presented their research titled "External Economic Shocks and Youth Migration Intentions in Nepal."

The conference concluded with a call for collaborative efforts to address population challenges across Asia, offering participants an academically enriching and culturally immersive experience.
