Date: February 19-March 17, 2013 Prof. Williams visited the institute as a follow up for her study on “Household Income Diversification and Migration in the Chitwan Valley.” Her visit was primarily focused in understanding the household income diversification and out-migration in the valley.


Mr. Alex Zvoleff

The goal of Mr. Alex Zvoleff’s visit to the institute was to explore the connection of micro-level social dynamics to land-use and land-cover (LULC) change in the Western Chitwan Valley. Mr. Zvoleff is currently studying the influence of demographic characteristics on environmental resource usage (particularly wood and fodder collection) and subsequent environmental impact of wood and fodder collection in the Chitwan Valley.

Prof. York visited the institute in order to develop an understanding about the effect of Mikania micrantha on population of western Chitwan for the project, “Coupled Nature Human (CNH):  Feedbacks between Human Community Dynamics and Socio-ecological Vulnerability in a Biodiversity Hotspot”. During her visit, she conducted several focus group interviews and in-depth interviews with forest users’ group members and forest governance committee members about the governance of community forests in western Chitwan.

Prof. Sharon J. Hall (with Jennifer Learned and Dr. Abigail York) visited the institute to explore the existing circumstances prevailing in different forests of western Chitwan and to design data collection protocols necessary for the implementation of the Mikania study project under the, “Coupled Nature Human (CNH):  Feedbacks between Human Community Dynamics and Socio-ecological Vulnerability in a Biodiversity Hotspot.”

 Ms. Jennifer visited the institute two times in the year 2013.  Her first visit (May 12-22, 2013) was an exploratory visit that was focused to assist Prof. Sharon J. Hall to make understanding of the study  setting for the implementation of the Mikania project under “Coupled Nature Human (CNH): Feedbacks between Human Community Dynamics and Socio-ecological Vulnerability in a Biodiversity    Hotspot.” The goal of her second trip was to train the research staff and finalize the data collection protocols for invasive species mapping in Community forests of Chitwan Valley.

Prof. Hayford visited the institute to conduct a pilot study on “Measuring Social Competence in Diverse Migration Contexts.” The primary goal of her trip was to provide pilot data to inform the design of future survey research. The data was collected through informal interviews with parents about their goals for their children and their perceptions of normal developmental trajectories.


Ms. Nell Compernolle

Ms. Nell Compernolle visited this institute as part of her project called, “Remittances from an Absent Husband: the Effects of International Labor Migration to the Persian Gulf on Family Dynamics and  Consumption in Chitwan, Nepal.” During her stay, she focused on in-depth interviews on migration, marital dynamics, family finances, and family energy consumption and production. Specifically, her goal was to better understand how international labor migration to Gulf countries has affected family life in these domains in the valley.
